Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) G3 Practice Exam

Ontario's Gas Technician 3 exam draws from a defined slice of the trade's official code library, the first 9 of 24 CSA Standard modules, plus CAN/CSA-B149.1 (Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code) and B149.2.10 (Propane Storage and Handling Code). A bounded scope compared to studying "gas fitting" broadly.

One administrative change worth knowing about: since September 1, 2024, TSSA requires a customer account through their Client Portal before you can write the exam. If you're working from older guides that skip this, set your account up early rather than discovering it as a last-minute blocker.

Two paths to the exam:

1. Standard route: 110 hours of combined theory and hands-on training through a TSSA-approved curriculum, 75% required to pass each training module and each practical evaluation along the way, before you sit the EX 01 exam itself.
2. Challenge exam route: for experienced workers without formal training, if TSSA is satisfied your documented work experience demonstrates equivalent knowledge. This path costs $255.50 and still ends in a practical skills assessment, bypassing formal coursework doesn't mean bypassing proof of hands-on competence.

Eligibility outside the exam: an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, or being at least 18 and passing a Superintendent-approved qualifying test (the Wonderlic SLE) if you don't have that diploma.

The exam (EX 01) requires 75% to pass, the same bar as the individual training modules, so "competent" means the same thing throughout the whole certification path.

Since the content maps directly to specific named code books, focused review of those first 9 CSA modules plus the two B149 codes beats broad gas-fitting study. The exam is testing your command of defined reference material, the same material your training curriculum and practical evaluations already drew from.
